And so it begins, the messy part that is, and I am sure glad Babette is the one who wanted to apply the paper mache to this old tree and stump. I guess she knows me pretty well too, because early on I was warned to get ready for a messy process, and you know what, she was absolutely right! π
The paper mache gives the tree trunk a more realistic look, while the owl's perch should make a good home for him after he and the tree have been painted.
As for "Rocky" the raccoon, he will be placed on top of this stump once it has been painted. Now we wait until both pieces have thoroughly dried before Babette does her magic with the paint.
I already posted a few of these pics to my Facebook account, but here are some showing a vine with a little moss crawling up the sides and onto the roof. She used some brown Jute Twine and then hot glued it to where she thought each would look the best. This definitely gives the old home a more neglected and spooky appearance.
Next, it was time to make an old mailbox, and of course some mail and uncollected old newspapers. The support post for the mailbox was made out of soft base board, while the box itself was made out of card stock. She painted and distressed each to look old and weathered. The newspapers were actually made out of real newsprint. I have a couple of end butt rolls of blank newsprint, so Babette decided to use this in making the newspapers. I guess you might say these are the closest thing you can get to them being actual newspapers for this size house.
The last item for this post was a base that will be needed to support and display our Spooky Halloween House in the living room bay window. Without it, the house would sit too low behind a couch, which would have made it hard to get the full affect. So, after taking some measurements, I was off to my workshop (garage) to scrounge through all my extra pieces of wood in order to come up with a design and plan to build this base. After the box was painted, I distressed and stained it to give it a more used look. I figured, if something had to be made, why not make it so Babette could also use the piece anytime of the year she wanted rather than just to display this and our soon to be started Christmas House. Whether Babette decides to use it elsewhere will be entirely up to her. My thought process was at least it will be available if needed; and as a good husband one tries to think, or dare I say, outthink what a wife might need. Silly boy, of course no man will ever be able to accomplish this task; but what the hell, GO FOR IT! π
You know, depending on one's personal decorating taste, this could even be used as a display type coffee table. Just fill it with greenery or whatever type goodies you'd like to display, attach some feet, and then put the proper size piece of glass on top, and there you go! π
